Kazuo Souma

Career Summary

 Kazuo Souma is an intellectual property specialist with more than forty years of professional experience in patent prosecution, R&D and licensing contract , and strategic IP management.
 A native of Nagoya, he graduated from Aichi Prefectural Asahigaoka Senior High School and received his Bachelor of Science in Physics from Waseda University.
 Mr. Souma joined Toyota Motor Corporation in 1982 and served exclusively in the Intellectual Property Division throughout his tenure. Over the course of his career, he developed deep expertise across the full spectrum of IP operations, including patent practice, complex IP transactions, global IP strategy, and corporate IP governance. He qualified as a Japanese Patent Attorney in 1994 and obtained certification as a Qualified IP Litigation Counsel in 2005. Following his retirement from Toyota in August 2023, he established the Souma Patent Office in January 2025.

Professional Experience at Toyota Motor Corporation

Patent Practice (1982–1991)
・Responsible for patent filing, prosecution, and patent dispute matters.
・Conducted competitor patent analysis and countermeasures.
・Seconded for three years to Toyota Technical Development Corporation, where he focused on drafting patent specifications and conducting patent information analysis.

IP Transactions, Strategy, and Management (1992–2023)
1. IP Transactions Mr. Souma handled over 3,000 domestic and international IP-related agreements, including:
・Patent and knowhow licensing agreements
・Joint research agreements with suppliers
・Software development and licensing agreements
・Establishment of new business subsidiaries and technical assistance agreements
・Formation of international standardization bodies in the automotive sector and related IP governance frameworks
・Industry–academia–government collaboration agreements
・Strategic alliances with Chinese automotive manufacturers, including joint venture formation and technology licensing

2. IP Strategy
He played a central role in major strategic initiatives, such as:
・IP strategies for alliances with companies in software and IT sectors
・Development and implementation of the Toyota Group’s comprehensive hybrid vehicle (HV) IP strategy
・Formulation and execution of IP strategies for the Chinese market in cooperation with business divisions

3. IP Management
His responsibilities also included corporatewide and TOYOTA groupwide IP governance, such as:
・Strengthening companywide trade secret management systems
・Establishing an employee invention program to support the development of young engineers
・Designing rules for handling inventions by personnel seconded among Toyota Group companies
・Revising patent warranty clauses in supplier agreements to enhance supplier IP capability
・Supporting Toyota and Lexus brand management in collaboration with marketing and sales divisions

・Vice Chair, Copyright Committee, Japan Intellectual Property Association (1995–2001)
・Chair, Fair Trade Committee, Japan Intellectual Property Association (2005–2008)
・Served concurrently on the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Subcommittee on the Unfair Competition Prevention Act, contributing to legislative reforms strengthening criminal penalties for trade secret infringement
・Member, Japan–China Corporate Collaboration Working Group, Japan Intellectual Property Association (2006–2007)
